Hose spray guns make light work of the most common gardening watering tasks. With as many as eight different spray patterns, these guns are equally at home lightly misting tropical plants as they are when cleaning cars and windows. A good spray gun can turn a common garden hose into one of the most important tools in your garden.

How does a hose spray gun work?
Unlike a more traditional twist nozzle, a spray gun has a variety of spray patterns for different tasks. Once you’ve picked your pattern, a spray gun works as its name implies – you squeeze the trigger on the handle of the ‘gun’ to control the distance and intensity of the jet of water.
How should I choose a hose spray gun?
The key thing to think about is what you need your spray gun for. If you’ll just be watering plants, look for a gun with a few different, gentle spray patterns, so you don’t damage leaves and stems. For a more general-purpose hose, look for as many settings as possible, so you can clean your car as well as tend to plants.
Will I need any connectors?
Hose pipe connectors are the plastic or brass clip at the top of a hose pipe. They’re universal, and with very rare exceptions most hose guns will fit your hose. If you don’t have a universal connector or need a new one, we recommend a brass connector, as these tend to last longest.
How much should I spend on a hose gun?
£20 is a good benchmark. A good spray gun can fall either side of that – this list goes up to £30, and can go as low as £10, but £20 is about standard for the current market.

Gardena Comfort Multi Spray
Our rating: 4.5 out of 5
Pros:
- Comfortable and easy to use
- The trigger lock and adjustable flow can easily be used with one hand
- Has a gentle, water saving bubble spray
- Comes with frost protection in case its left outside through the winter
- Has a filter in the base of the handle that can be removed and cleaned
Cons:
- High price to pay for a plastic spray gun
This BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy winner is easy and smooth to use. The large spray head has a good range of sprays and it comes with a long warranty. It has five spray patterns including a soft spray, a fast jet, a bubble spray, a fine mist and a flat spray, and all performed well with a strong jet of water. Although other spray guns have more spray patterns, these were enough to cover most jobs in the garden, from filling up cans, watering fragile seedlings and irrigating borders and pots.

Draper 7 Pattern Aluminium Spray Gun
Our rating: 4.3 out of 5
Pros:
- Comfortable and light to hold
- Has a durable brass connector
- Each spray has excellent pressure
- Comes with a lifetime warranty
Cons:
- The trigger lock needs two hands to engage
- The adjustable flow is fiddly and slow to change
This BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy winner is easy to use and has excellent pressure. There’s a good range of sprays for different situations and it feels durable and built to last. It has a simple dial that has the type of pattern written around the edge, and it clicks clearly into place with each twist. However the ring lock on the top of the handle that holds the trigger in place needs two hands to engage, and adjustable flow behind it is fiddly and stiff to twist up and down.

Pros:
- 8 spray patterns
- No drips or leaks
- Robust and long lasting

Cons:

This solid, sturdy gun has a zinc core and is built to last. With eight spray patterns it’s suited to all watering needs but has a fiddly trigger lock and flow adjuster. The dial is simple and clicks through the eight spray patterns smoothly and these include a shower spray, a mist spray, a fan, a full jet, a flat jet and a vertical jet, all good options that cover even difficult watering jobs. There were no drips or leaks even changing sprays.

XHose 8 Speed Spray Nozzle
Our rating: 4 out of 5
Pros:
- Simple, light and comfortable to hold
- Has 8 spray patterns
- Has good pressure
Cons:
- Needs two hands to lock the trigger which is engaged by a ring on the top
- Doesn’t feel very durable thanks to the light plastic finish
- No adjustable flow option
This BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy winner is light and comfortable. Its eight spray patterns are easy to change and it has no leaks and comes with a one-year warranty. It’s a simple spray gun that has eight different patterns – shower, soaker, mist, angle, full, cone, flat and centre – so it covers all gardening and household needs. The trigger lock is a ring on the top of the handle and needs two hands to flick into place, which is not ideal, and the adjustable flow is a fiddly little switch that takes ages to wind up or down, making it fairly ineffectual. For general spraying and watering, though, this is an easy-to-use spray gun for less than a tenner.

Verve Metal 7 Function Spray Gun
Our rating: 3.8 out of 5
Pros:
- Metal construction
- Good simple adjustable flow
- Seven patterns
Cons:
- Poor pressure
- Trigger lock needs two hands
- No warranty
This light, metal gun has seven different spray patterns and a simple flow adjuster. It’s easy to use and has a comfortable trigger handle, but this locks at the base and it takes two hands to click it on. It’s easy to accurately control the rate of water by simply twisting the flow control button. The smooth dial clicks in to place as you switch between the seven spray patterns and these include a mist, a jet and a shower pattern. There are no leaks or drips between patterns but pressure is poor and weak for all seven sprays.

Karcher Multifunctional Spray Gun Premium
Our rating: 3.8 out of 5
Pros:
- High quality design and materials
- Robust
- Comfortable and easy to use
- Simple trigger lock and adjustable flow
- Drip and leak-free
Cons:
- Only four spray patterns
- Weak pressure
- The most expensive model tested
This is a high quality, well-designed spray gun with four spray patterns and simple controls. The trigger is easily locked on or off with either the palm of the hand or the fingers, and the adjustable flow is altered by simply moving your thumb up or down. The four patterns cover most watering needs and include a fine mist, a horizontal flat jet, an aerated jet and a shower spray. However, their pressure was weak when testing, which made watering slow, and it was difficult to reach the back of borders. On the plus side there were no drips or leaks, even when changing patterns. The dial doesn’t go all the way round when changing patterns so you have to scroll back to the beginning to find the one you need.

Flopro Professional Multi Spray Gun
Our rating: 3.3 out of 5
Pros:
- Sturdy and robust
- Easy to control with one hand
- Simple dial to switch spray patterns
Cons:
- Tricky to connect when the water is switched on
- No lock or on/off trigger, only adjustable flow
- Metal handle cold/hot in the hand
- No warranty
This is an easy, comfortable gun with plenty of patterns. It has a simple design, with just a dial and an adjustable flow switch – there’s no trigger handle or lock and the flow is simply controlled and switched on or off by pushing the switch up with the thumb. The downside to this simplicity is that it can be hard to attach the gun to the hose when the water is already on – the pressure keeps pushing it off.

Claber Multijet Pistol
Our rating: 3 out of 5
Pros:
- Good trigger switch
- Easy adjustable flow
- Two-year warranty
Cons:
- Plastic and chunky in the hand
- Hard to tell the difference between the four sprays
- Slow and stiff to change spray patterns
- Expensive for what you get
This gun is simple, with just four spray patterns. It’s expensive for what you get. The trigger lock is easy to click on and off and the adjustable flow is accurate and easy to change, although you do need to use another hand. There are four different spray patterns – shower, concentrated, fan and mist and these are adjusted by rotating the whole head. In reality this is stiff and slow to turn and it is difficult to tell the difference between the four separate sprays. You also need to scroll back to the beginning to find each one.
