About Agapanthus
Agapanthus, also known as ‘African Lily’ are exotic and flamboyant looking flowers that are adored by many! Easy to grow, pest and disease free! These perennials boast vibrant, bright colored flowers on upright stems.
Agapanthus thrive in full sun and 6-8 hours of sunlight is recommended however, partial shade is advised in hot climate areas. They will perform the best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Hardy in zones 8-11 while some types can be grown in zone 7.
How to Plant
- Plant in Spring after danger of frost has disappeared.
- Dig holes and plant bulbs 5cm deep and 12-18 inches (30-45cm) apart. Be sure to leave enough room to be able to grow but close enough to help each other remain upright.
- While being heavy-feeders, Agapanthus do well with an organic compost mixed into the soil whilst planting.
- Place the bulbs with the pointy end facing up.
- Cover with soil and water as needed.
- If in colder areas, make sure to protect with heavy mulch around the roots to protect plant from the cold.
How to Care
- Water regularly during growth season
- Be sure that your plant is not in the shade to much. Cold weather and shade can cause it to fail.
- Feed twice during the growing season (once in early spring and again two months after). A balanced fertilizer is best.
- Remove faded blossoms to promote new growth.
- Withhold water when leaves start to turn yellow.
- Remove the foliage when it withers.
