Tulip La Belle Epoque

Tulip La Belle Epoque – Ever-changing Opulence

If you like Art Nouveau with its nature-inspired motifs, have ever owned or admired the “Chat Noir” posters or love the Gibson Girl hairstyle, you’ll love the La Belle Epoque. La Belle Epoque is French for “beautiful era”: the years between 1870 and 1914, years characterized by optimism and prosperity. Much of the art and culture that we love today originated or was immensely popular in this vibrant period: the paintings of van Gogh and Renoir, the sculptures of Rodin (“the thinker”) and the books of Proust. This was also the time when the Eiffel Tower was built, big world fairs were held, and cabaret and burlesque clubs like the Moulin Rouge had their heyday.

Tulip La Belle Epoque – double the petals, double the size

The optimism, hope and opulence of this era come together perfectly in double late Tulip La Belle Epoque. Double late Tulips do exactly what they say on the box: They flower a bit later than most other Tulip varieties, at the end of April into the beginning of May, and they have double the amount of petals of other Tulips, giving them their opulent, luxurious appearance. The blooms of these Tulips not only have extra petals, but are also extra-large and can easily reach a diameter of 4” across. The blooms stand on sturdy stems of 12-20” tall and make ideal cut flowers, also because they last much longer in vases and bouquets than other varieties.

Tulip La Belle Epoque – Popular & poetic

Because of all this, all double late Tulips are very sought after, but Tulip La Belle Epoque is one of the absolute bestsellers of this variety. And it’s easy to see why: It combines a staggering amount of hues that bring out the poet in everyone who describes it – dusky rose, coppery gold, caramel brown, salmon apricot, champagne, silvery pink, butter caramel, pale green, and glowing yellow accents…But it’s not just the colors themselves, it’s also the way they interact. Tulip La Belle Epoque blooms for a long time, and during that time it looks different every day, increasing in beauty as it matures. And as if all of that wasn’t enough, it also smells divine, bringing bees, butterflies and other important pollinators to your garden.

When to plant Tulip La Belle Epoque

Double late tulips do exceptionally well in areas that have cold winters and late-starting springs. Like all spring-blooming Tulips, La Belle Epoque should be planted in fall. When the leaves have turned and it’s getting colder outside around October or November, it’s time to get out your garden implements and start planting. Since extreme weather conditions like rainstorms and gusts of wind can damage Tulip La Belle Epoque, it’s best to plant them in a more sheltered location, but make sure that it’s a spot with excellent drainage, as bulbs planted in waterlogged soil will start to rot very quickly. If you want to get the most impact out of Tulip La Belle Epoque, plant them in groups of at least 10-15 bulbs. Dig holes that are 6-7” deep, spaced about 5-6” apart. Place the bulb in the hole with the pointy end up, fill the hole with soil and water well. All you have to do during winter is forget about the bulbs you planted, and come spring you’ll get a happy surprise when groups of these luscious beauties start to grow in your garden.
